Laser hair removal is a method that uses lasers to selectively target the hair bulb and diminish hair regrowth for at least three months. The basis of this procedure is the specific targeting of melanin in the hair bulb. Melanin absorbs the light emitted by the laser at a specific wavelength. The energy of the laser converts into heat, causing the selective destruction of the hair bulb. The goal of laser hair removal is to damage the stem cells in the bulge of the hair follicle by targeting melanin. The patient should avoid plucking, waxing, or electrolysis before laser therapy. The lasers designed for hair removal can be used on most parts of the body such as the back, the bikini area, the chest, the face especially the upper lip and chin, the neck and the shoulders. The most common side effects of laser hair removal are edema and erythema, which generally resolve within 24 hours after treatment. Furthermore, hypopigmentation and hyperpigmentation may occur and are related to skin color. After therapy, patients should be given ice to decrease pain and reduce swelling. Topical corticosteroid creams help to minimize posttreatment erythema, edema and hyperpigmentation. Patients should be advised to continue avoiding sun exposure.
