Mesotherapy is a minimally invasive injective procedure, first introduced in Europe in the middle of the past century for the treatment of localized pain, but currently used mainly for aesthetical purposes, which gains daily expanding popularity among patients, thanks to the internet and media advertisement.

Concerns about  systemic and local side effects of mesotherapy  are increasing in current literature, especially considering that the evidence based efficacy for several indications remain controversial or anecdotal. Outbreaks  of skin reactions after mesotherapy unresponsive to antimicrobial therapy have been reported in the USA, providing alert for not  licensed practitioners. A review of the available evidence of the possible side effects of cosmetic mesotherapy is provided, along with recommendations for practices related to mesotherapy.
